The Saddest Day in My Life - Essay Example We were taught to live in righteousness and morality. Even at a young age, I learned the importance of holding fast to one's belief. Even when I am already married and have a family of my own, I am still very closely attached to my family. My brother and I are even teamed up in a small business of importing used cars. One of my aspirations in life is to help alleviate the abject poverty that my countrymen are experiencing in Ethiopia. Although I can say that my family is living in a good condition, it is my conviction that a successful and meaningful existence can be measured by one's concern for others and the compassion he had shown towards his fellowmen. Each of us has a specific duty on earth. No matter how great or small it may seem to be, it is what we must be committed to pursuing. Life is short and one has to take advantage of that fleeting moment to make a difference. I was an active member of the Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD), a coalition of four existing political parties of Ethiopia which combined to compete for seats in the Ethiopian General Elections. I was a member of the propaganda and awareness division. One of my responsibilities is the distribution of flyers. I actively participated in the national elections for my party by organizing various meetings and training. One of our objectives is to inculcate in the minds of our youths the culture of democracy for them would be aware of their rights and duties as Ethiopian citizens.Because of my active involvement in CUD, I received much harassment. With the absence of any search warrant, my office was raided by government forces. They took several documents from my possessions and I was accused of different kinds of falsified information. My brother and I, together with some of my colleagues in the party, were arrested and were detained for several days. For the three days that I was detained, I was interrogated and was told that my business would cease from the operation because it is linked with anti-government bodies. I was told that the only way to straighten the situation is if I denounce my membership in CUD and if I testify against CUD. I was warned that if I refuse to cooperate with them, my business would remain closed. They even threatened that I would suffer the consequences of my unlawful deeds.After much thought, I decided to agree to their terms in order to save myself for the moment. With that, I was released. I then realized that it would be impossible for me to live peacefully in Ethiopia. I decide at once to leave the country at the earliest possible chance to spare my life. Since I already have a valid US Visa at that time and my wife works for an Ethiopian airline, she was able to book me a flight with an open family ticket. Very shortly, through connection and assistance, I finally managed to exit from Ethiopia. I left on Sunday night of July 10, 2005, and arrived in the United States on July 11, 2005. I was very sad to be departed from my wife and family but I was forced to by circumstances. My father has also been living in the United States for six years under political asylum because of human rights violation of the current government. I stayed with him while I was processing my own request for asylum.

Islamic Women Essay At the beginning of the 21st century, many Islamic women are deprived equal rights with men suffered from oppression and family violence. The example of Saudi Arabia, India and Indonesia show that violence and abuse are still the major problems faced by Islamic women. The main problem is that law in Islamic communities does not come into force being violated. In many communities women are not legally protected and have no possibility to protect themselves: sexual, physical and emotional violence are the major weapon of intimidation of women. In some communities, family violence is a result of traditions and values as an integral part of cultural development. In contrast to India and Indonesia, in Saudi Arabia women have no rights and freedom of choice. The main problem is that in Saudi Arabia rights of women are constitutionally granted by most of them do not come into force and violated. â€Å"Like millions of other Saudi women, Munif hoped she would be allowed to vote since nothing in the law excludes it. But after a year of debate, the government told women to wait† (Women Speak Out In Saudi Arabia, 2005). Today, the main rights of women in India and Indonesia concern birth control, civil rights, education and work. Today, individual freedom of American women means much more than the absence of physical coercion but an equal social status. Still, similar to Saudi Arabia women, many women in India and Indonesia suffer from domestic violence and sexual abuse. Indonesian women are the most unprotected category which experiences violence within the institution of marriage. Among this group of women sexual abuse and physical violence are the main forms of humiliation and oppression. Similar to Saudi Arabia, in Indonesia women have constitutional rights, but face discriminated. Similar to India, Indonesians have job opportunities and high social status than women in Saudi Arabia. â€Å"Compared to the lives of their mothers, sisters and even brothers who stayed in the village these factory women have gained a strong advantage in terms of wages and conditions† (Indonesia, n. d). In Saudi Arabia women are not legally protected and have no possibility to protect themselves. Women have no equal opportunities with men in pay and work conditions. Most of them take low administrative positions or considered as common labor. In Saudi Arabia, religion dogmas and values play the dominant role determining the destiny of a woman and her social position. In contrast to Indonesia and India, in Islamic countries women deprived the right to use contraception and safe abortions. The main problem caused absence of freedom and rights is that abuse is the part of the culture. In India, â€Å"among Hindus, polygamy too was rampant† (Bhandare 2004). In contrast to Islamic countries, India accepts liberal laws and regulations which give women more rights and freedoms. The main preventive measures against family violence include social programs organized by women’s organizations, legislative initiatives accepted in the national level, petitions, publicity. In Saudi Arabia, women are still lived under double oppression, cultural and legal. Similar to Indonesian women, Indian women have a right to divorce, but in reality it takes a long time and a long legal battle while men can divorce at will in a short period of time. Also, there is a great threat for a woman not to receive children because she does not have a possibility to earn for living. Women in India and Indonesia are deprived of many rights and freedom, but they are free to choose their work, receive education and divorce. In contrast to these groups, Saudi Arabia women are deprived these rights living under state and family oppression. â€Å"For instance, events like a soccer match are strictly for men. In public, there are separate sections where they eat, where they work, and where they pray† (Women Speak Out, 2005). In sum, Women in India and Indonesia are free to choose profession and work conditions, broad employment opportunities and equitable wages; they have equal rights with men to be promoted and appraised. The examples of women in Saudi Arabia show that specific gender roles determine the way of living and cultural norms of several generations of people and strong enough to be changed in a short period of time. Switched LANs And Network Design Engineering Essay The Local Area Networks (LANs) can serve only a small geographic area and there is a limitation for the total number of hosts that can be attached to a single network. In order to communicate between the hosts network devices like hubs and switches are used. Thus a set of LANs that are interconnected by switches will form switched LANs and this lab is all about the performance evaluation of the switched LANs. OBJECTIVE: The main goal of this lab assignment is to compare and study the performance of switched local area networks (LANs) that are implemented through the hubs and switches. The performance study of various parameters like throughput, number of collisions, and delay of the network is done through the simulations obtained from the project implementations and the questions are answered from the simulations. IMPLEMENTATION PROCEDURE: The implementation of the switched LANs is done through OPNET IT Guru software. The software provided step by step procedures. In the first step, the network is created with the hub configuration having nodes from node_0 through node_15 and the hub is named as HUB_1. The Ethernet connection 10BaseT, operates at 10Mbps and is used to link between the 16 hosts present in the network. The network nodes are then individually configured for the traffic generation parameters and packet generation parameters attributes. As the hub configuration would send the packets received at its input to all the output lines irrespective of the destination the hub configuration network design is as shown below. The second configuration uses both the hub and the switch. Here a switch is used between the two hubs named HUB_1 and HUB_2. Each hub is connected to 8 nodes and the connection is established through the Ethernet 10BaseT link. The main difference between the hub and the switch is that the switch uses a store and forward mechanism. Thus it will forward the packets received at its input port to the required destinations and sometimes buffers due to the network traffic. The network configuration for such a combination of hub and switch is detailed in the below simulation design. The above two network configurations are analyzed for the attributes packet generation and traffic generation parameters. Both of them are similar and the packet generation occurred for every 100 seconds. The simulation of the configured network is run for every 2 minutes and the details are captured for further evaluation. OBSERVATIONS AND RESULTS ANALYSIS: The simulation results for the configured networks are clearly depicted by the graphs. Fig 3 details the traffic sent over the hub and the hub-switch combination. From the graph we can identify the amount of traffic sent across both the configurations remained the same. Fig 4 shows the packets that are received at the destination for both the configurations. From the graph we can state that the hub-switch configuration is more efficient over the hub alone configuration. The analysis of the time delay in Fig 5 gives a clear idea about the efficiency of hub-switch configuration. The hub-switch configuration had a delay of 0.020 seconds constantly for a particular load and there is no such criterion for the hub only configuration. The collision count in Fig 6 depicts that the collision count for the hub alone is nearly 2300 for a constant amount of time and the case with the hub and switch combination is far less which counts to nearly 900. Thus we can say from the graphs that the efficiency of hub and switch network configuration is more when compared to the hub alone network configuration. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS: Question 1: Explain why adding a switch makes the network perform better in terms of throughput and delay. Answer: From the simulation results it is evident that a switch performs well by dividing the network into smaller collision domains. Thus the throughput could be increased and also the switch provides the network bandwidth of 10 Mbps completely on each of the nodes and hence the delay of the network is reduced effectively. Question 2: We analyzed the collision counts of the hubs. Can you analyze the collision count of the â€Å"Switch†? Explain your answer. Answer: Yes. The collision count of a switch can be analyzed with the behavior of the switch. The switch uses a store and forward mechanism. Thus it also has the capability of buffering the packets in times of network traffic. These major features of the switch would enable the switch to have no collision. Thus switches are more preferred. Question 3: Create two new scenarios. The first one is the same as the OnlyHub scenario but replace the hub with a switch. The second new scenarios is the same as the HubAndSwitch scenario but replace both hubs with two switches, remove the old switch, and connect the two switches you just added together with a 10BaseT link. Compare the performance of the four scenarios in terms of delay, throughput, and collision count. Analyze the results. Note: To replace a hub with a switch, right-click on the hub and assign ethernet16_switch to its model attribute. Answer: The results obtained from the simulation graphs would show the throughput and time delay in the different configurations. From Fig 7, it is seen that hub and switch configuration has the increase in throughput and the hub only configuration has the least throughput among the four. The time delay between the four configurations is analyzed from the Fig 8. Here the two switches configuration has a least time delay because the usage of switches would optimize the delay in time. This is clear from the simulation graph as the time delay is around about 0.002 seconds. The analysis of collision count is already discussed in question 2. When two switches are used by the property of the switches the collision count would be zero. Thus switches are the best configuration devices as compared to hubs. CONCLUSION: Thus, the Switched LANs lab assignment gave a very clear vision for the choice of network configuration in a preferred location by learning the hub and switch basics. The simulation results were evident to confirm the better efficiency of a switch than a hub. Hence, the optimization of network by a switch instead of a hub will produce cost efficiency. LABORATORY 4: NETWORK DESIGN OVERWIEW: In this lab we developed a companys network having 4 departments. Since it was a small network, we used LAN model. We used OPNET Guru to simulate the network design. Once the design was done we assessed the outcome and tried to excel the network by changing some of the hardware, such as using separate servers for database, files and web vs. using one for all three of them. We also compared the same network using low vs. high density cables. Thus, this lab is about the optimization of network. OBJECTIVE: The main goal of this lab was to show the learning of the fundamentals of network design. In order to doing this we took into account the users, services, and locations of the hosts. IMPLEMENTATION PROCEDURE: To implement this network, we used OPNET Guru as it is one of the greatest tools in Networking. It allows one to simulate the network with any combinations of devices and protocols we have available today. First, we created an empty project and added objects: Application Configuration, Profile Configuration, and a subnet as node_0, node_1 and subnet_0 respectively. Then, we configure services for applications, namely: engineers, researchers, salespeople, and multimedia users. Later, we configure the subnet. Then, we create a 10-workstation star topology LAN. We do this for each of the four departments stated above. Now, we configure all the departments. Now, we configure all three servers based on different services needed for each followed by connecting each department to the subnet. Finally, we setup the network to test for statistics about the global page and run the simulation to assess the results. Later, we keep the same setup as in Figure 1 above and change the background utilization to be 99 percent to create the Busy Network. And run the simulation again. Finally, we duplicate the Busy Network and replace the low density cables with high density to observe differences. Now you are you are ready to observe the results and analyze the network. OBSERVATION AND RESULTS ANLAYSIS: In figure 4.3 bellow, we observed that the response time of the busy network was much higher than the simple network. Also, the system stabilizes very quick compared to the busy network. From figure 3, high density cables were very helpful in optimizing the results. With high density cables we get busy network producing a response time as if it were a simple network and it stabilizes really fast too. It was apparent that File server stabilizes a lot faster than both the Database Server and the Web Server. Second, Database Server fluctuate the least. It became apparent that one server replacing the three server has the most load, so it CPU Utilization is the most and it somewhat higher than the Web Server alone. QUESTION AND ANSWERS: Question 1: Analyze the result we obtained regarding the HTTP page response time. Collect four other statistics, of your choice, and rerun the simulation of the Simple and the busy network scenarios. Get the graphs that compare the collected statistics. Comment on these results. Answer: From the HTTP response time for the simple and busy networks, the simple network is represented in blue and the busy network is represented in the color red. The comparison of the two time delay would result in a conclusion that the delay is much less in the simple network as compared to the busy network. We have considered four other scenarios for comparison and they are depicted in the graph as below: The first plot shows the Ethernet delay time and from the figure we could notice clearly that the delay in the busy network is higher as compared to the simple network. The next plot shows the time delay comparisons of the TCP delay. We could understand that the TCP delay for the busy network is fluctuating initially ata higher rate and then it subsides almost even but still at at a higher pace. On the other hand the simple network has a ver low flutuating initial time delay and then it has stabilized after a period of time. The graph below represents the response time for the DB entry and the comparison between the simple and busy network shows a great deal of difference. The busy network is a bit fluctuating at the initial stage and then it commences to a stable state. But still the delay is high over here. The simple network is having a quite stable time responde from the beginning. This could be observed from the graph below. The response time for the DB Query is as shown below. In this scenario also the simple network has a quite stable time delay and very small when compared to the initial fluctuating time delay of the busy network. Question 2: In the Busy Network scenario, study the utilization% of the CPUs in the servers (Right-click on each server and select Choose Individual Statistics ? CPU ? Utilization). Answer: The CPU utilization during the Busy Network Scenario for the webserver, database server, and file server are as below: From the graphs above, it is obvious that File server stabilizes a lot faster than both the Database Server and the Web Server. Second, Database Server fluctuate the least if you look at the magnitude on the y-axis. Question 3: Create a new scenario as a duplicate of the Busy Network scenario. Name the new scenario Q3_OneServer. Replace the three servers with only one server that supports all required services. Study the utilization% of that server’s CPU. Compare this utilization with the three CPU utilizations you obtained in the previous question. Answer: It is apparent from the graph above that the one server replacing the three servers has the maximum load, so its CPU Utilization is the most and it somewhat higher than the Web Server in the previous scenario. This is because the web server was using the most CPU time in the previous busy scenario. Question 4: Create a new scenario as a duplicate of the Busy Network scenario. Name the new scenario Q4_FasterNetwork. In the Q4_FasterNetwork scenario, replace all 100BaseT links in the network with 10Gbps Ethernet links and replace all 10BaseT links with 100BaseT links. Study how increasing the bandwidth of the links affects the performance of the network in the new scenario (e.g., compare the HTTP page response time in the new scenario with that of the Busy Network). Answer: After making all the changes to the links, we have the following results: From the results above, it is obvious that network response time is much faster and that it stabilizes really fast too. In other words, the Q4_FastNetwork is compatible to Simple Network instead of Busy Network only because we used high density cables. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, we learned the basics of designing a network, taking into consideration the users, services, and locations of the hosts. We learned this by using OPNET tool which is great for simulating network systems. We also, learned that using high density cables will optimize the network greatly and can even convert the response time of a network to be so fast as if it were a simple network and it stabilizes the network very fast too. We also noticed that using separate servers for different activities, such as, Database, files and web gives better performance of CPU utilization. Thus, one should consider using high density cables and separate servers for Databases, files and Web to avoid overloading just one server.

Human Values Versus Technology in Beckett's Waiting for Godot and Freud's Civilization and its Discontents One of the most significant and wondrous features of today's society is the progress that has occurred with the passing of years and generations. Never before has humanity witnessed the technological advances that are now transpiring. Such advances encompass almost every facet of life as humanity knows it: from biomedical engineering to the exploration of outer-space. Science has proven to be beneficial to life as well as to the expansion of the mind. However, civilization is not in need solely of scientific revolutions. As the famous Beckett and Freud have implied in their literary works, humanity has not lost touch with innate human values that have been intrinsically bestowed upon it. These values, implicitly stated in the works created by Beckett and Freud, are the need for companionship, and purpose and meaning in life. The ideas of companionship and meaning in life are ubiquitous in Beckett's play Waiting for Godot. Much of the play is a mockery of the condition humanity would be faced with in a meaningless world. The four main characters in the play, Vladimir, Estragon, Pozzo, and Lucky, undeniably represent the lazy side of humanity in that they spend their lives waiting for something elusive that evidently will not ever appear. By the end of the play, Vladimir and Estragon are still hoping for this arrival, and there has been no trace of it. This demonstrates the futility of spending so much time anticipating an event that is not likely to happen, given previous experience. Beckett's play is therefore a mockery of the human value of purpose and meaning in life. Not only does Beckett's play ... ...ng new ideas regarding humanity. With the progress of new knowledge and technology, it seems reasonable that human values would advance as well. This, however, has not proven to be the case. Instead, the values that are innate to humanity have remained firmly established since the beginning of time. For example, people are still seeking the meaning of life in religion, as they did thousands of years ago, even though there has not been any discovery that has supported religion. In addition, people still seek companionship in the form of dating, families, sex, and friendship. Companionship has not become obsolete with the advancement of technology, and the way companionship is viewed has not adapted to the realities in society. As much as technology and science have contributed, a value as simple as acceptance of diversity has not progressed nearly as much.

Language †Symbolic Representation Essay

Language is a way of communication that involves symbolic representation. Language allows information about culture and society to be passed down from one generation to another. It is there to make people understand each other. Language is not only descriptive but is also an action. The way people use language is how they see things in the society they live in. People who speak the same language will up to a certain point share a perception of reality. This is different to people who speak more than one language. † No two languages are ever sufficiently similar to be considered as representing the same social reality. The worlds in which different societies live are distinct worlds, not merely the some worlds with different labels attached.† Edward Sapir, Understanding Language. If we are to believe this quote from Sapir, then language is probably the most important influence on building a society or any other social group. Language is more than a balance of communication or a means of bonding people together in a society, it is power, whether it be maintaining the status quo or changing it. When the countries of Africa regained independence, one of the first things they did, was to restore the mother-tongue names, Rhodesia named after the British colonialist Cecil Rhodes, was quickly changed to Zimbabwe. Also, the city in Northern Ireland known to the English as Londonderry is known to Irish nationalists as Derry. Londonderry only became so, after the London merchants who controlled it several centuries ago changed the name, it had always been Derry before that. Women are referred to as Miss or Mrs, which gives their marital status, whereas men are just Mr, and when a women does get married it is expected that she take her husbands surname, why? Is it, that the way language is used, it is telling us that men are superior to women and their family name is more important, maybe in the past when women were inferior to men, but not now. More and more women are keeping their own family name when they marry and refer to themselves as Ms, which doesn’t give any clues as to marital status. Even women who are not married don’t like to be referred to as Miss, so they too are being referred to as Ms. Names are very important in societies, when naming a newborn child it normally indicates the sex of the child. Once a certain name is used for a girl it loses it popularity as a boys name, e.g. Beverley, Gayle and Shirley were all popular boys names. Names that are for both sexes normally have different spellings, e.g. Tony / Toni, Terry / Terri and Lesley / Leslie. In some cultures girl’s names are derivatives of boys, by adding a few letters to the end of a boys name it becomes a girls name, e.g. Henry / Henrietta, Pat / Patricia and Robert / Roberta. Many boys’ names in English have no obvious meaning, girl’s names do, and girls are sometimes named after virtues, such as, Faith or Patience. Girls are also named after flowers, Rose, Lily or Daisy all meaning pretty. Class distinction can also be recognised in names, Tracey, Sharon, Kelly, Kevin, Paul, John, Steve and Chris all sound common but Chloe, Charlotte, Harry, William, Oliver and George all sound upper- class and would be perceived to be so. The way in which language is used shows a difference in social class, working class people tend to be abrupt with their children saying don’t do that, and when the child asks why they say because I said so, and middle class people would be more likely to explain in detail why. Middle class people tend to talk to their children more than lower class people. Working class children will grow up with a limited amount of language to do well in the society in which they live, therefore restricting the job or career opportunities open to them, they will more than likely have a manual job rather than a non-manual job. Whereas middle class children will grow up with a much broader vocabulary, so they will do well and go on to university and have better non-manual well-paid career. This is why children from a middle class background do well at school and go on to university rather than lower class children. Although, it is not being said that lower class children are less intelligent than middle class children, but because middle class children grow up with a better and broader vocabulary they do well as adults. There are so many different ways, in which language is used in society, slang for example, they way a sum of money is relayed, a ton meaning one hundred pounds, a monkey meaning five hundred pounds and a score meaning twenty pounds. People who are deft use sign language. Body language is another, the way people look when they are lying, the way people act when they are attracted to somebody, this is body language. Swearing is a form of language, why is fuck offending? Who said that a certain word is offensive? Its just a word, but it’s the way people are taught from a young age that they learn what words are acceptable to use in polite society and what words are not acceptable to use in polite society. When someone dies, people aren’t meant to mention it for fear of upsetting them, people don’t want to use language in the wrong way. People don’t like speaking in black and white, they go for a grey way of speaking known as ‘euphemisms’ e.g. people don’t say menstruation they say, got the painters in, red flag day or mouse in the house. Another example would be, people don’t say died, they might say something like, pushing up daises, kicked the bucket or meet the maker. Euphemisms are used mainly when people don’t want to face the bluntness of a situation so they try to make things sound nicer. Someone will say, I had to have the dog put to sleep, when really what should be said is, I killed the dog. Most euphemisms begin from childhood, passed down from mother to child, the naming of things, pee pee for urinating, winky or willie for penis, minnie for vagina, woo woo for dog, poo poo for excretion, din dins for dinner etc. People use euphemisms all through life, as adults we use them not unlike children, when we say, shag, rumpy-pumpy, hanky panky, a bit of how’s your father or nookie we mean sexual intercourse. Adults also use euphemisms to name sexual organs such as, prick, dick or knob all meaning penis, or a women’s organ’s can be referred to as bush for vagina, and then there’s always boob’s, tits, baps etc. all meaning breasts. People use euphemisms all through language to make things sound innocent rather than harder and fuller. Euphemisms are even used to name food, people eat pork but really its pig, but do people go into a restaurant and ask for a slice of pig. The same for beef, its cow but people don’t go into a restaurant and ask for cow. Language is used all the time in people’s day-to-day lives, people use language from the moment they are born and sometimes even before they are born. Some expectant mothers play classical music or relaxation sounds to their unborn child, in order to make them have a good cultural beginning before the child is even born. All people in society use some form of language all the time, whether it be sign language, body language, verbal language, language through a computer for handicapped people, sign language for the deft, euphemisms etc. As humans we communicate all the time and the way we communicate is through language. Even doctors, nurses, bank workers, teachers etc all have a way of using language which is known as jargon.

When school is close to the house, students will not have problems with attendance. Another reason was incredibly low tuition fee because it is pretty minor for international students. Even when student has financial problems, this college has all financial helps. For instance, scholarships and loans are available for students. All these financial help open doors for every student  who is interested in being educated. Finally I chose this college because all my major classes are in one campus. My prospective major is petroleum engineering, so I spend lots of time in the library studying math and other subjects. I am very lucky that I do not need to waste my precious time being stuck in traffic before I get from one campus to another. Lone Star College is the best community college and I suggest for future students choose very carefully their colleges or universities. There are lots of colleges with their unique teachers and students and it is not easy to make a decision.

(1989) Adult Education is an intervention into the ordinary business of lifean intervention whose immediate goal is change, in knowledge or in competence. An adult educator is one, essentially, who is skilled at making such interventions. Who are adult learners? Adult learners are normally considered as the learners who are over the age of 25 years. They are normally referred as non-traditional students. Adult learners group has different abilities, wide range of educational backgrounds and cultural backgrounds. They have more responsibilities and experiences. In traditional education system, as soon as students finish the high school, they enrol in tertiary education. It can be a diploma or an undergraduate program. Adult learner typically doesn’t follow the traditional education system. â€Å"The adult education is also called â€Å"workforce education† (Mary Jo Self, Ed.D.) Learning is a life-long process. It starts from the very first day of life to the very last day of the life. Most of the people think that, the learning or studying happens only in school or college life. This thinking may be more from the adults. Adult learners will have many responsibilities unlike a fresh high school student. Most of the adults are full time workers and full time parents too. They always have many barriers to learn. These barriers can be divided into various categories. It can be physical barrier, attitudinal barrier or a structural barrier. It is true that adults always face some challenges that younger people don’t have to face. Some of the studies show that many adult women also face lots of barriers like early pregnancy, low socio-economic status and child care and many more as a barrier to learn. These barriers will be broadly discussed. A fundamental aspect to continuing higher education is identifying and overcoming of barriers to adult learning. The main purpose of this assignment is identifying why adults are less in learning process. In this way, I will mainly focus on the barriers to adult learning. Later in the assignment, I will try to provide some ideas to overcome or reduce the barriers in adult learning. BARRIERS TO ADULT LEARNERS A very basic aspect to continuing higher education is to identify and overcome the barriers to adult learning. â€Å"Adult learners are an increasing population in higher education. Between 1969 and 1984, the number of adults participating in education programs increased 79 percent† (Kristen M. De Vito, Eastern Illinois University). This group of students take learning as a serious work. This group of learners share are large quantity of number students learning in an educational institution. Even though, the number adult learners are increasing day by day there are many barriers for them to learn and to become successful in their life. The barriers to adult learning can be described as follows. Situational barriers Institutional barriers Dispositional barriers Academic barriers Employment training barriers Cultural barriers Situational barriers The situation barriers mostly occur with respect to a certain situation. Due a unfavourable condition in life, some adult do not want participate in learning. Sometime, these conditions make them frustration to go to an educational instate. This barrier is mostly working related or family conditions. There may be a huge number of responsibilities that one has to carry out at the same time. These responsibilities may be more important than going to an educational institute. Due to these unfavourable situations the opportunity to learn and to educate will be very much narrowed for those learners. This barrier may include: Busy work schedule: Most of the adults who are willing learn will be working to earn. Due the busy schedule in their work place, they may not get enough time to go an educational institution. Sometime, due to high living expenses, they may be working more than one place to earn. Their busy schedule may have no time to allocate for studying. The working men and women might have to face this barrier. Family and children: This barrier mainly may face to women. Most of the times, in many societies’ women are responsible for family and children especially. They have to look after children, feeding them, taking them to school or any other house works are mainly done by the women. This condition will even worm if a couple live alone because there may be no one or a few to look after the children. Men also have to face such a situation. Financial problems: Many people stop studying after the high school due to financial problems. That is the one of the main reasons why people join workforce, to earn. Most of the times, adult learners do not earn enough money to spend for their tuition fee. This is very big concern for the most of the adults who want learn and most of the people stop their learning process at point. This is one of the biggest issues that adult learners might face in Maldives. Lack of child care services: Child care centres will help people to move to jobs and as well as to study if time allows for them. But, sadly, this service is rare in many developing and underdeveloped countries. For example, in Maldives, hardly we have any childcare centre. Transportation: This is also one of the conditions that people might face. If there is a good transportation systems people can travel from home to the place of study. Unfortunately, the transportation system may not be very systematic much rural area in the world or may be expensive to travel from one place to another. In addition to above mentioned situational conditions, some other situations that put a barrier to learn are sensory or learning disability, lack of support from others like from family or employer. Institutional barriers Institutional barriers are the inconveniences faced from the educational institutions. This difficulty may be either the design of the course, method of delivering lectures or even sometimes administrative difficulties. Institutional barriers happen intentionally or unintentionally. Some of the institutional barriers include: Difficulty in paying tuition fees: Some of the educational institutes are very strict in paying tuition fees for them. Such institutions have very fixed dates to pay or a very short time line to pay the tuition fees. Due the lack of money or lack of time adult learners may face lots of barriers to pay the tuition fees. Some of the learners may quit the programmes because of this difficulty. Inconveniences faced due to improper scheduling of the programs: There are cases that institutions often offer full-time programmes for the learners. This wills a big issue for the adult learners, since they are working to earn. Attending to a full time programmes will be impossible to an adult learner. No courses are available to meets learners needs: This is again one of the obstacles that leaners might have to face. There may a very limited number of courses available in an accessible institution. There are no wide varieties of programmes available. This will cause adult learners to stop at a point. Lack of necessary qualification to enter the programme: This is again another problem that adult learners or even regular learners might have to face. Since the adult learners are mostly involving in the work skill programmes, they have to stop at this point. Most of the adult learners may not want go back and study as a traditional students so that they can gain enough qualification to enter the programme of their choice. Location: The location of an educational institute also plays an important role to participate adults in learning process. In many cases, the educational institutes are located in developed areas. This will benefit only to those who lives in that area. If we look at the Maldives, most of the adults in atolls will face this problem because almost all the tertiary educational institutions are located in Male’. Dispositional barriers Dispositional barriers are connected with the internal or personal factors that put a barrier to learn for adults. This barrier mainly talks about the learners’ attitude to learn. Many adult learners may have negative attitude towards learning. This may be due to age factor and/or may be fewer results are made in the past studies. Of course, if a person did not make a good result in their traditional education system then then most of the people will have a negative attitude to learn in future. This will affect their psychological aspects in learning. The age factor is also an important dispositional factor that can be described as a dispositional factor. People might think they are too old to go for an educational institute. They might ignore the fact that, â€Å"learning is a lifelong process†. There are some situations where the learner might be too sick to carry out the task of leaning. â€Å"Health issues emerged from our fieldwork as a major barrier for learners and potential learners† (Peter Bates and Jane Aston, 2004) .The availability of time is also an important factor. Due to busy of an adult, they might not have enough time to attend an educational institution. The adult are full time workers, full time parents and when they join for education they become full time students too. Not everybody has potential to study with this very schedule in their life. The personal affairs like job, child and family care are more important for them than learning. There is another problem that some adults might think, â€Å"they don’t require any more education.† This may because of peer pressure or how their peers are behaving. Moreover, just after the high school, some people will get a good job which will give a decent amount of salary. This is sometime a barrier for them to come back to learn. In addition to that, inadequate language skill or not having any interest for learning are the factors that will affect the adult learni ng. Academic barriers This barrier includes the needed skills for future learning. This barrier may include the lack of language skills which are very much important in learning process. This skill actually helps to access the information of any form. If the learners cannot access the information, how they can learn. The ability to play with the numbers is also an important factor. Of course, all will understand (if they are literate) basic mathematics. But numerical skills are important for further studies. Today is the information age. Every work is done by using internet and computers. So the basic skill in information technology will be very important. Inadequate skills in computer and IT will put a barrier for some of the adult learners. If a person of academically not good in his/her childhood and teenage, then that will still remain as a barrier for them even though they want goes for higher studies. Employment training barrier These are the barrier in the work place. This may include the factor like not supporting from the employer for adult learners. Moreover, the employer will give much preference to well educated workers for giving / sending for seminars, workshops and/or any other training programmes. The less educated workers will be left over most of the times. Very often, work place, women are given less preference than male while selecting for a training programme. This might create bad impression to learn by the women. The immigrants are also given less preference than locals for training programmes. Most of the employers might think that training women and less educated people will not bring much economic welfare of the employer. Cultural and socio-economic barriers Cultural barriers are basically the barriers due to culture. In some cultures, it believe that women don’t have to go for work and as well as for higher study. The belief that girls should marry at an earlier age will almost stop the girls to go for higher studies. The socio-economic status of the society will also play important role adult learners. As discussed above, in some societies, people will get marry at the earlier and get pregnant soon. This is a big barrier for adults specially women very often. In addition to that, large families, poor economic conditions and unemployment are also barriers to adult learning. OVERCOMING BARRIERS TO ADULT LEARNING Helping adult learners to overcome the barriers is not an easy work or even not possible in some cases. The barriers that adult learners’ face will not be able to fix in overnight. To overcome the barriers, learners need long term support and working environment must need a change. Moreover educational institutes require changes in their administrative and curriculum issues. The adult learners and employers need to create close relationship. With this relationship, the employers can help the learners to learn and create a positive environment for the learners. They may provide some more free time, and also can provide study leave for the adult learners. This will encourage them to participate more in learning process. The institutions must be more flexible and understanding. Institutions have to recognise that adult learners are working people and/or looking after a family, so they cannot be compared as regular traditional learners. The rigid policies and regulations for traditional learners will not work for the adult learners. The rule and regulations must be flexible enough to meet the requirements of the adult learners. They require more help than the mainstream learners. Some flexibility with the adult learners may include, developing flexible policies on punctuality, attendance and schedule that are best suit for the learners so that adult learners can cater for their work and for their family. As mentioned above, the demography is a great barrier for adult learners to participate in learning process. To overcome this, introduction of distance learning with the technological advances can be best used. In this way, the busy adult learners do not have to attend the institute campus. â€Å"Distance learning is an excellent method of teaching adult learners because they need flexibility to contend with competing priorities† (Galusha, Jill M, 1998). They can stay at home and can study on their own. Moreover, they can contact with their lecturers via technology using the appropriate portals established by the educational institute. This will reduce the barriers to transport. This also will solve the problems of strict attendance face by the adult learners. â€Å"Adults studying online have a higher GPA than traditional counterparts† (Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence, 2007). Lack of information about the educational opportunities available for adult learner is a big threat for them. This threat need to be avoided so that adult learner have chance to participate in a program of their choice. For this, proper advertising of appropriate form should be selected. If all the information is available on internet, there may be many who cannot reach. Moreover, the employers can play an important role in spreading information. Just a notice for staffs will do more than we think. The barrier within the working environment should be avoided even by using rules and regulation. The employer can arrange in such a way that the leaners can be released from the work to a certain extent to attend classes. Moreover, the training programmes should be arranged in such a way that all the required employees are benefited. Moreover, to overcome the barriers the following actions can be taken: Media campaign using different media to aware and encourage about adult learning. Give more focus on breaking the barriers related with culture. The educational institutes can develop the programmes that are flexible to adult learners such evening class or part – time study programmes of flexible attendance. Flexibility in course completing time is very important. Improving child care services to look after the children so as to help the learner to spend time in working environment as well as study environment. Provide financial supports to adult learners using low interest study loans, paid leaves, or study allowances. Accept that adult learners are busy learners who have taken the decision to join to your program. Celebrate their bravery and willingness to try. CONCLUSION Have you ever wondered why adults are still looking for the opportunities to learn? They seek out and learn new knowledge and skills. But there are barriers for adult learns. Barriers are found to be situational; which are mostly family and work related issues such as looking after children, busy work schedule and lack of support from the employer and/or from the family. Barriers are also found to be institutional: in which it occurs from the side of the educational institutes such as policies and practices related with adult learners. This can be inconvenient scheduling, rigid attendance, lack of proper course or lack of financial supports due to high tuition fees. Dispositional barriers are related with attitudes of the learners such as lack of confidence, health related issues or not wanting study furthermore, and weak performance in academic areas in past. The barriers can be academic; this happens because of not enough language and numerical skills. Some cultural and religious b eliefs also put a barrier for adult learners to learn which is known as socio-economic barriers. With these barriers, the adult learners are increasing and scoring better than the traditional main stream students. So together with employers, institution and learners themselves have try to reduce the barriers to adult learning. The Practice of Law Will Allow Me to Mobilize Individuals and Communities Rowing is God's sport. The crisp early morning air, mist-shrouded hills, shells gliding silently on the glassy surface, oars slicing in unison. For casual observers, time slows and they become immersed in art. An ardent rower, I experience this beauty, but I also know that strength, courage and endurance command the shell, as in life. Silence. White knuckles and callused palms suffocate the oar. In anticipation, my breathing, even my pumping heart stops. Then the horn sounds. Adrenaline rips through my torso. I pull, and keep pulling, sinews stretched to breaking, every muscle screaming to quit. Concentrating only on the starting dock, I surge forward relentlessly. That dock is my beacon. I left home at sixteen. My single mother's drinking had become intolerable. Regina, my twin, was pregnant; her drug-addict boyfriend moved in. The starting horn had sounded. High school races by when you have to study, make a living, do chores, play guitar in a band, and still maintain a social life. But the independence gave me strength. There were some ironies. I had no curfew, but there wasn't much to do in Artesia, New Mexico. As my own guardian, I could sign sick slips and grade reports, and attend PTA events. I earned two varsity letters, the maximum AP credits, and enough wages to escape debt. Disregarding warnings that "fifty cents and a humanities degree could only buy a cup of coffee," I selected political science and economics, impelled by a seemingly instinctive curiosity to study the two edifices of our society. Taking to reading like breathing, I devoured Marx, Mill, Keynes, and Smith, oblivious to my r... ...ities, and setting mechanisms for coordinating these efforts nationwide, so that populations can pull themselves up by their bootstraps. I want to fight poverty and social inequity on a large scale. My plans include obtaining a law degree with a concentration in public interest law, gaining broad policy experience as a legislative advisor and eventually leading my own anti-poverty agency. But I dream of running for elected office, and winning-politics has the power to mobilize individuals, communities and nations. But who am I to dream such things? Why will I succeed? Because I am passionate? Maybe. Because I live my life like I row? Possibly. The real reason is that there will always be a part of me, Regina cleaved from the same flesh, for whom poverty is a daily struggle. Regina is my beacon. I see her in the eyes of every person I try to help.

Ausubel’s Expository Teaching Model Highly abstract concepts, such as jurisprudence and sovereignty, oftentimes cause high school students much struggle when trying to thoroughly understand such conceptual ideas. To teach these theoretical concepts, one must not only equivalently utilize David Ausubel’s Expository teaching model, but also retain an overall knowledge of other valuable strategies related to Ausubels’s model (Woolfolk, 2004, p. 281). To Ausubel, the most significant idea is that of the advance organizer, a statement of introduction that aids students in organizing the information about to be presented. Also to a teacher’s benefit are the ideas needed to form a concept, such as exemplars, defining features, irrelevant features, non-examples, and prototypes. Introducing the advance organizer, presenting ideas in terms of specific examples, and linking the content back to the advance organizer is Ausubel’s model for expository teaching (Woolfolk, 2004, p. 283).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ausubel’s expository teaching primarily focuses on teaching general ideas to comprehend one specific concept, otherwise known as deductive reasoning. His approach always begins with an advance organizer (Woolfolk, 2004, p. 282). This statement aids in priming the students for the context and idea about to be described. It will help in developing schemas, or organizing information, and helps direct all attention to the key ideas coming from the material being presented.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The first of the two types of organizer is the expository organizer, which primarily focuses the introduction of new material. The second is the comparative organizer, which compares old and new information resulting in students accessing schemas already in their working memory, otherwise know as the â€Å"temporary storage of information that is being processed in a range of cognitive tasks† (Woolfolk, 2004, p. 242). An expository lesson must always elaborate on the advance organizer. Connecting the information back to the organizer should also be utilized in completing the lesson. Identifying qualities such as defining features (required features), exemplars (actual instances), irrelevant features (often present but not relevant), and non-examples will all assist in creating a prototype, or an ideal example, to aid in grasping the concept. The goal is the ability to take the concept and relate it back to th... ...and trees to compare by non-examples. My instructor concluded his lesson by highlighting his organizer and repeating the idea that abstract ideas were all symbols of something. Abstractions are not an actual object itself, as opposed to concrete ideas that are material and solid.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The expository method can be ideal for teaching abstract concepts such as jurisprudence and sovereignty to high school students within a limited amount of time. Through first naming the concept and giving the definition, as well as applying tools such as the advance organizer, a teacher will gain the students attention and allow them to organize their ideas in order to make connections. When teaching a concept, it is best to keep in mind that students will respond most when a concept is taught in a way that is useful and efficient versus being taught in a manner geared only towards answering exam questions. By extending and connecting the concepts in these significant ways, students will be able to focus on the meaning and not on memorization. According to a 1903 product liability case, a company is liable for failing to notify the buyer that the product is potentially dangerous, is effective, or negligence in the manufacture or sale of a dangerous product. Courts today, rationalize strict liability by establishing the fact that manufacturers are better positioned to prevent risk of loss than, that Of the consumer. Examine each contract carefully ensuring it contains five essential elements. The legitimacy of the agreements is dependent upon it containing an offer, acceptance, consideration legality and capacity.To further explain, an offer is an invitation to enter into a contract. If a company agrees to the terms outlined in the offer, they have then accepted the agreement. Once an agreement has been recognized, it must be established that both parties have intentions to enter into a legal binding contract. The considerations of his agreement are legal exchanges for services or products. For ACME Fireworks, this will include the prices paid for the fireworks and the amounts desired. In order to be legally binding, the cost of doing business must not be illegal and, the ability to perform must not be impossible.Finally, it must be determined that both parties have entered into the contract freely without coercion or duress. The owner is concerned that there will not be enough work for the additional employees once the initial orders have been filled.The terms and conditions of the contract will determine the type of employees ACME will hire. At-will employment provides no obligation of continuous employment once the orders have been filled. For this reason, the law allows an employer to terminate without just cause or reason. Generally, this rule is applied for seasonal work. ACME Fireworks has several options to consider in meeting contract demands, performance and productivity. By hiring temporary full-time associates, ACME can readily meet demands however; there is no incentive to maintain a standard of quality or productivity.Same is true for part-time associates as their hours are usually dictated by the needs or demands Of a business. Consideration for casual and day labor employees might prove useful. Casual employees typically work on an as needed basis and usually consist of single parents, college students or applicants seeking extra money. Operating as a Sole Proprietorship, the business and the owner remain one and the same. This provides the highest risk of loss to personal assets. The disadvantage is that a sole proprietor has limited options for raising capital and no limits on liability for business debts; thus if the business does not fare well, the sole proprietor can face personal bankruptcy,† (Rogers, S. 2012).As a partnership, ACME Fireworks will share ownership with two or more people. â€Å"Partners are automatically owners and managers of the business, and the law presumes equal rights unless the partners have specified otherwise,† (Rogers, S. 2012). In a partnership, taxes are assessed on the earnings of the partners and not that of the business. Sh ould the company become party too lawsuit or is unable to fulfill its contractual obligations, the personal assets of all the partners can be used to satisfy a judgment by the court. Partners are not only liable for their own actions, but also for the business debts and decisions made by other partners. In addition, the personal assets of all partners can be used to satisfy the partnership's debt,† (SABA. Gob, 2014). Should ACME Fireworks consider a Corporation, it will become an independent legal entity. The owner(s) will then become shareholders which will limit their liability and legal responsibility. In order to remain free of any personal liability, the company must operate according to state corporation laws. If the corporate form of business organization is used to defraud creditors, stockholders will lose the protection of limited liability and will be held personally liable for all debts of the corporation,† (Rogers, S. 2012). Since a corporation requires the f iling of complicated forms, annual reports and fees, it can prove costly for a small company. Additionally, a corporation is double taxed whereby; the company pays taxes on its earnings and the shareholders pays taxes on dividends paid UT. A Limited Liability Company (LLC) provides the limited liability features of a Corporation but operates like a partnership or sole proprietorship.A LLC â€Å"typically features easier formation (although filing under the statute is required) and lower filing fees, flow-through taxation where members of a LLC are taxed on their earnings, but the business itself is not taxed, the stability of a corporation (a member's leaving will not dissolve the LLC), and limited liability, where the business is liable for its debts and the people who own it are not,† (Rogers, S. 2012). Since ACME Fireworks is a small business with a single owner, a LLC will provide a low cost alternative that provides limited protection of personal assets.Unlike like a cor poration, the taxes, profits and losses are passed through to each member of the LLC. Members are protected from personal liability for the actions and decisions Of the LLC. However, in the case of wrongful or illegal acts, the limited liability can be pierced and personal assets can be assessed. Additionally, it is important to separate business funds from personal funds. Should ACME use a personal ann. account to pay its creditors, they can in turn pierce the limited liability and seize the owners' personal funds. The Federal Government does not recognize a LLC as a separate entity as in a corporation.As such, the owner(s) of ACME Fireworks will file their shared earnings on their personal income tax. If the LLC is a single owner operation, income will be reported on a Schedule C just like that of a sole proprietorship. Should there be more than one member sharing in the profits and losses, a form 1 065 will be filed as is done in a Partnership. The entire net income of the LLC mu st be accounted or in the filings of all members involved. The owner of ACME Fireworks has asked for advices in choosing an entity that would provide the least risk to personal assets, should he fail to meet his contractual obligations.It is important for ACME Fireworks to understand the risks associated with the nature of the business. In assessing the current operation, ACME Fireworks operates out of a garage and currently employs approximately 15 people. Essentially, if the LLC becomes party to a suit or is unable to fulfill its obligations, members enjoy the same protections as that of shareholders in a corporation.However, as a limited liability company , they are not exempt from litigation involving wrongful acts by its members or employees. In a LLC, the owner will retain control over the company as in a sole-proprietorship and lessens the risk of personal liability. The owner is also concerned with ACME's ability to meet either contractual obligations or make payroll. The LLC would provide the protections it needs without relinquishing control to a Board of Directors, as in a corporation. Without knowing the specific terms and conditions of the agreements, it is difficult to ascertain viability and validity.

Prohibition, Why Did Americans Change Their Minds? Alcohol was thought to be the source of several of the nation’s problems. Issues like domestic violence, unemployment and poverty. The Women’s Christian Temperance Union first introduced the idea of prohibition, the illegalization of the buying, selling or consumption of alcohol. Prohibition was made official in 1919 as Nebraska became the 36th state to ratify the proposal. Prohibition took effect one year later in 1920.In the beginning, prohibition had an overwhelming amount of popularity from most of the country however Americans quickly changed their mind. Prohibition ended in 1933 with the 21st amendment to the Constitution. The increase in crime across the nation, several negative financial aspects of prohibition, and the eventual increase in corruption and loss of national restriction were all factors in the nation’s sudden change of heart. Perhaps the largest factor in the change was the overall increase i n crime.The most horrifying statistic from the Prohibition Era was the dramatic increase in homicides. Information taken from a FBI statistical report on homicides states that there was an excess of 9 homicides for every 100,000 people. There were more homicides during prohibition than during the upcoming decades, including both World War I and World War II (excluding deaths during combat). In order to continue the supply of alcohol, now illegal, underground operations began popping up in urban cities.Bootleggers ranged from middle class citizens and their homemade moonshine to an elaborate network complete with a supplier and several customers. With limits on law enforcement and the extent of U. S. jurisdiction, it was easy for people to get around the law. The distance off a U. S. coastline and boarders proved to be difficult areas for law enforcement to maintain. Bootleggers could often get out of U. S. jurisdiction and across the border to either Mexico or Canada where alcohol w as completely legal for sale and consumption.Another reason Americans changed their opinion was the negative effect prohibition had on several different financial aspects. Prohibition took away an enormous amount of income from the government, first with the absence of sales tax on the illegal merchandise. Any alcohol sold there could be no sales tax and thus gained no profit for the government. For all the tax that could have been collected the country could have paid off their national debt with a surplus of $200,000,000 dollars according to research titled The Last Crusade written by Leslie Gordon.But first and fore most prohibition shut down factories. Manufacturers had to shut down plants putting Americans out of a job. Job loss gave prohibition a negative outlook. The third reason Americans eliminated prohibition in 1933 was the corruption at a government level and the loss of national restriction needed to enforce prohibition laws and limits. Crimes also occurred within the country unnoticed by police officers, causing assumptions towards law enforcement with questions on their relationship and involvement with the bootleggers and underground operations. Prohibition put the country in chaos. The increase in crime, lack of income for families and the government, and the government corruption and loss of restriction all became facctors in America’s decision to repeal prohibition.
